The non-combatant stand of Doss reflects the studied view of the Seventh-day Adventist church from as far back as the American Civil War, a war that pitted American against American & until very recently was responsible for more American deaths than all other wars since. The non-combatancy stand was part of the denomination’s position from the very start of formal organisation as a denomination in 1863. German variance from this position in WWI caused a major rift in the church. SDAs teach that it is right to do good in war by assisting the wounded, but not to take life. If all Christian denominations historically had taken that position in all countries, think how many millions of lives might have been spared!
